Very disappointed in the experience; understaffed; long waits; deteriorating condition of the ship. Add-on costs for dining room.

We are 4-star mariners with Holland America. The cruise looked to be very good in advance as we'd cruised on the Kongingsdam when it first sailed and believed the ship to be very good. Obviously, the pandemic had an effect on the ship as it was understaffed, overcrowded and with long lines even at the bars. Service at the dining room was pathetic in that on the first night we waited over an hour before part of our group had to leave the table before their meal; then an additional 1/2 hour before food was delivered. On two of the four nights we ate in the dining room dessert was not served although ordered and the wait was lengthy. The food itself was mediocre; not up to the standards we have been accustomed to on this line. Portions were small and there were upcharges for steak or lobster. Fewer choices as well.

On Christmas morning at about 8:40 am the captain announced via intercom into the rooms that Santa Claus had been sited and 'updates' continued until 9:20. Would have been cute except we're not Christian and we were sleeping at the time.

On the 26th we ordered room service to be delivered at 9:45am. At 9am the food was delivered by a steward who apologized for waking us up (he did) as he explained that the crew had a 9:30 meeting and so they couldn't deliver our order in a timely manner. There had been no advance notice to passengers of this and was, to say the least, irritating to be awakened by crew consecutive days for no legitimate reason.

Cabin Review

Verandah Stateroom

Too small. We had two separate cabins; one for son, daughter-in-law and 2 under 2 years old grandchildren; one for my wife, myself and our other granddaughter. When the fold out bed was extended in our cabin, access to the veranda was blocked. So in the evenings to get to the veranda I had to literally climb on and over the pull-out bed.

Cabin stewards were very helpful and performed their services to our satisfaction.

Port Reviews

Cabo San Lucas

Pirate Voyage Shore excursion was very good. Although alcohol was served - -given away actually - -- the crew of the ship were very good with our young grandchildren --both 2 and under. Much more fun than expected. Saw whales breaching. And the crew performed in a very good way for the kids on board. This was the only excursion that allowed children the ages of our grandchildren.
