Our family took the Holland America Double Denali Adventure & Discovery Cruise Tour, which included two days in Fairbanks, two days in Denali, one night in Anchorage and seven days on the 1200+ passenger ship, the Statendam. My husband and I are in our early 60's, our daughters and future son-in-law in their early 30's. We all agree that it was the vacation of a lifetime.

Holland America did an outstanding job of taking care of us on both land and sea. We booked this particular tour because it included a tour director for the land portion. Kristi Bennett was our guide and was well organized, knowledgeable and very personable.

Both the weather and the wildlife cooperated beautifully for us on this trip. We started our journey on June 15th and weather.com predicted showers for each of the next 10 days. We came well prepared with wonderful jackets from L.L. Bean. The jackets were waterproof, hooded, with zip-out fleece linings. Both the fleece and the jacket came with large zippered pockets that could hold keys, money and even passports making it unnecessary to carry burdensome purses or backpacks much of the time. Because the weather is so changeable, the jackets were a very worthwhile investment. The weather was delightfully cool - ranging from the low 50's in the mornings to around 70 in the afternoon. It was quite windy, though, on several of the boat excursions we took, and even hats and gloves were nice to have available. Despite the forecast, we did not have a lot of rain.

Cabin Review

Verandah Suite

My husband and I had a cabin with a balcony towards the front of the ship on Deck 9. We found the room to be a good size with plenty of storage space. Our daughters had inside cabins across from us and they found these to be quite nice as well - did not at all feed the need for a window or balcony. We did not notice any excessive noise - the temperature of the rooms was fine. We especially liked having the New York Times extract delivered to our room each morning. Our room stewards were great.
