Overall this was a very good cruise. However, since this was our first Viking Ocean cruise, I had higher expectations. The best part was the crew - they were fantastic. The ship was beautiful and our cabin (we stayed in category DV6, deck 3) was spacious enough and clean (could have used a little more drawer space - had to live out of suitcase for some items). The bathroom was also very spacious and had plenty of storage (shower was terrific). The pros: 1. crew - very accommodating, knew your name, went above and beyond - couldn't have asked for more; 2. spa - very nice place to relax; 3. food - overall very good, especially Manfredi's; 4. embarkation - took about a total of 20 minutes to register and get onto the ship; 5. disembarkation - probably the smoothest ever (although it was 2:45 a.m.); 6. onboard laundry - we were able to travel with carry-on size suitcases because of this amenity. The cons: 1. main pool - I was surprised that like any other mega ship people got up early to reserve space - if you didn't get there early you didn't get a lounger, even the ones facing the ocean were always taken except on some port days and people never left; 2. afternoon tea on day one - we arrived about 15 minutes early and couldn't find a seat anywhere - they explained that tea overflowed into the Explorer's Lounge but that was full too - while they jumped through hoops to 'accommodate' us it was not the experience we expected and left a bad feeling from that point on - they asked us to wait for tables to empty but like the loungers no one left so tables rarely opened - things went much smoother after day one; 3. excursions weren't the best (included and paid for); 4. the buffet was very good but at times too crowded so finding a table was difficult (tip-don't go to buffet when it opens-wait at least an hour or longer); 5. at least for this cruise the movement of the ship was horrible - people actually disembarked early because of sea sickness (obviously not the fault of Viking but something to keep in mind); 6. embarkation wait at airport - this took very long and was not necessary - we waited at baggage area without information - from time off plane to ship (which was a 15 minute ride) was about 1.5 hours; 7. disembarkation bus ride to airport - almost flipped over (we think the driver fell asleep) and apparently didn't know where he was going because it took about 20 minutes longer than stated AND we drove around the city in circles - we were bus 1 and buses 2 and 3 arrived at airport before us even though we left earlier.
Spacious enough and clean (could have used a little more drawer space - had to live out of suitcase for some items). The bathroom was also very spacious and had plenty of storage (shower was terrific).
We arrived at Colon and took a 1.5 hour bus drive to Panama City which was beautiful (old city).
We took a paid for cave-tubing excursion (the port was like any other - lots of shops and restaurants - not much else). We did not feel this was a good value, especially the 1.5 hour bus ride each way. We only spent about a total of 15 minutes in the water actually 'tubing'. Very disappointing.
