To celebrate my 75th birthday, as an early present from my husband, we decided to take a Viking River Cruise. We picked Viking because of their excellent reputation and ratings. We were impressed with the advertisements we saw on TV showing the ships docked in town; implying it would be easy to visit each stop. So in April 2022, we booked a 7-day Danube Waltz aboard the Viking Ingvi from Budapest to Passau for November on Viking Ingvi. The booking included free airfare and the “Silver Spirits” drinks package. The ship was beautiful, and the food was generally good. We were fortunate to have beautiful weather each day. It was crisp, but no rain. However, there were too many disappointments that made us decide to never take a river cruise again. We are not new to cruising.

We paid $100 extra to have Viking book flights for us under their “Air Plus” program, which gave us some say regarding the flights they booked for us. We did have a travel agent that Viking never communicated with. The first outbound flight from Washington Dulles to Munich on Lufthansa was cancelled by the airline. My husband discovered this (about a month after the cancellation) when he went to the Lufthansa website. After he contacted Viking Air, they re-booked us on KLM. When KLM cancelled a KLM flight to Budapest and re-booked us on a later flight that resulted in a 7-hour layover in Amsterdam, we decided that was okay as the alternatives were worse. However, several days later, Viking Air re-booked us on an itinerary involving three separate flights and a terminal change at JFK without ever notifying us. It was only because my husband logged-in to KLM’s website that he discovered what they had done four days earlier. It took him almost an hour (including 30 minutes of waiting on hold for a supervisor) that he was able to get back our IAD-AMS-BUD itinerary. We had 5 total bookings.

My advice: frequently check your flight arrangements on the airline’s website.

Cabin Review

Deluxe Stateroom

Viking Ingvi – Danube Waltz Cruise – Budapest to Passau Nov. 9 to Nov.16, 2022 – Description of the ship:

Main Deck – Standard Staterooms 100–125

Middle Deck – Entrance to ship - Staterooms 200–237 - The Restaurant – Kitchen - Guest Services – Shop

Upper Deck - Staterooms 301–341 - Aquavit Terrace - The Lounge/Bar - The Library

Sun Deck - Sun Deck - Walking Track - Herb Garden

There is an elevator from the Middle Deck to Upper Deck only. The Sun Deck and the Main (lower) Deck are only accessible by stairs. The Main Deck floor is below the water line, and that is where our cabin was located. There are 13 steps from the Middle Deck to the Main Deck.

We were able to check into our cabin (#107) on the Main Deck slightly before the stated 3 pm availability time. On the back of the cabin door is a full-length mirror and two hooks for hanging clothes or jackets. Next to the door jamb is the temperature control for the cabin, and below that is the room card receptacle. You must insert your room card to turn on the lights. Upon removing the card, all the lights in the cabin go out, except for the bathroom and closet lights. The cabin is very compact, but the space is well utilized. The exterior wall and wall to the bathroom are magnetic. There are two windows with a shelf just above water line. Viking does not put a top sheet on the bed, although you can ask for one. There is a duvet that is not too heavy. There are two nightstands, each with a bottom shelf and pull-out tray for additional space. The queen bed is two twin beds pushed together. Each side has an individual, adjustable reading lamp as well as a conventional lamp. In the bedroom ceiling are 6 recessed light, plus one in the foyer. There 3 speakers, one smoke detector and 2 sprinklers.

The electric outlet on the left side of the bed is European 220 volt and the outlet on right side of bed is a USA 110 volt. Bring adapters if you want to utilize all the outlets. Opposite the bed on the desk wall there are 2 regular-size drawers (one contains the hair dryer) and one deep drawer; a refrigerator; a mirror, and a flat screen TV. Under the mirror there are two electric outlets – USA 110 and European 220. Under the TV are again two outlets – USA 110 and European 220, however, the European outlet is being used to charge the tour receivers – also there is a volume control for the ceiling speakers and USB charging point. There is a bench chair under the desk. On the desk/counter are provided an ice bucket; glasses; and a water bottle, which is replenished as needed and is complimentary. The closet on the left contains 4 deep shelves plus a shelf for the safe (you set your own combination). There is just one hanging closet next to the door, which is about 2 feet wide.

The cabin floor is carpeted, and the bathroom floor is not. However, the bathroom has a heated floor that you can control. You can add dry clothes on the floor if needed. There is a sliding door to enter the bathroom. There is a small sink with two glass shelves and two water glasses mounted on the wall above it. There is also an outlet just for shaver. Under the sink, there is a bottom shelf that runs the full length with the night light underneath it, which stays on all the time. There is a toilet paper dispenser, tissue dispenser, and a sanitary napkin dispenser. There is a shorter middle shelf.

Above the toilet there are two hooks and above that is a shelf where bath towels are stored and has bars for hanging wash clothes. The shower has an interesting design – the glass wall is angled, giving a wider space at the end where the shower controls are located. The shower entrance consists of two doors that open inward and outward. The shower has a hand-held shower head on a bracket. The pressure is adequate, and the water is hot. One door has two hooks for bath towels. There are 4 Freyja Collection squeeze bottles: shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and body lotion, which are replenished as needed. There is a soap bar by Freyja as well. You have washcloths, hand towels, and bath towels.
