We did a lot of cruise investigation ahead of time. Lots of YouTube videos, read articles. All of them pointed to Viking to be the "real deal". It was more expensive than some, but let me tell you, VERY worth it.
We had the basic stateroom, big (like 300 sq. ft. or so) - full bathroom, and balcony. (All cabins come with a balcony.) The room was great, and our "cabin boy" was eager to please, and on top of things all the time. Clean linens, bed made and turned down at night. Minibar was restocked (not a lot of alcohol, but sodas and snacks).
The ship was drop dead gorgeous. The Explorer's Lounge was one of our favorite haunts, two stories at the front of the ship. There were many other areas for relaxing, and even some games - including electronic game tables - overlooking the atrium area of the ship.
Roomy, comfortable. Well maintained, space to chill, even watched a movie one night. Service was right there when we wanted it.
Wow. Cradle of Civilization place for sure. Did the Full Acropolis Experience, highly recommend. Walking through the Acropolis, seeing the Parthenon, Temple to Athena, wow. Very uphill/downhill, not for the frail.
Did the ruins of Pompeii - wow again. Ancient city, Mt. Vesuvius. Fascinating, lots of walking again.
Off to Mt. Etna - covered with snow! At the 3000 meter mark, had lunch and wandered some of the older craters. Very much like what the moon must look like. Bleak, cold, dark. Would recommend something else, for us it was cool, but a 2 1/2 hour bus ride out and back. Messina is lovely, and would have loved to spend some time there.
