This was my first time on Royal. Probably will be my last unless I get a really cheap deal. The overall experience was average. Some things were fantastic, like the crew. I can't believe how happy, friendly and helpful all of the crew were.

Food was below par, worst of any cruise I've been on. In the MDR, most of the food came out cold on the first night. We informed the wait staff and they did their best to correct the problem right away, but subsequent nights had similar problems. The only soup that ever came out hot consistenty was the French Onion. I had a couple fish dishes that were just undercooked. Although it got better after the first night, there was only one meal where everything was served at the right temperature. The Windjammer buffet was not much better. Even when getting there at opening time, much of the food was already getting cold. Most of the food was just meh, nothing special tasting. Their best dishes were a couple of the vegetarian and gluten free curry dishes on the Windjammer, which had some great flavors; also a tomato basil soup that did some out pretty hot. Presentation in the MDR was not a priority. Food slapped in the dish and handed to the server. All of the other cruises I have taken have strived to make the food presentation photo quality pretty, especially in the MDR. Yes, that doesn't affect the taste, but it does show that some care has been taken in the kitchen. I did see some pretty snacks being delivered to the Diamond lounge, so I know they have the ability.

The room steward had memorized my name by the second day and called me by it to greet me with a Hello or Good Morning every time he saw me. He also knew exactly when I left and would get in and change out the wet towels every time I was gone. I wish he wouldn't have, but I appreciate how hard he was trying. Two nights we had the cute towel animals on the bed. I saw the room guys working on that one night. It seemed like one guy made them all and the others delivered them to the rooms. Maybe lots of new employees post-covid still learning to fold.

Room 4881. Great location and central to all the activities on the ship. It was easy to run back and forth from the room to any location on the ship. Downside - if you are a person who needs absolute quiet in order to sleep, you'd better not want to try to go to bed until after midnight. This room is one of the closest to the activities in the centrum, and there is music or activities there every night until late. The room was often thumping with bass. I'm okay with that - when I'm tired, I sleep no matter what. The room itself seems to have been recently refurbished, the shower re-done to include new tile and a hard shower enclosure (gone with the dreaded shower curtain!). There were plenty of drawers if you need to unpack, but they were mostly smaller sized. My friends had a room where some of the drawers at the desk were larger sized ones. Room included a love seat sized couch, which got in the way of walking down the aisle on the right side of the bed (don't bother climbing over, just jump on). Four American outlets for charging electronics. There was at least one European outlet and a hairdryer in the drawer.

Port Reviews

King's Wharf

Go to the Museum at the fort if this is your first time here. There's a lot to look at. Well worth the price of admission. There are a few shops with the usual over-price tourist goodies. Very few beaches within walking distance, but easily accessible on the bus routes. The problem is timing of the buses and number of ships in port. Our port stop was too short to really get much done. We did the ferry into Hamilton and walked the shops there. Had to rush to make sure to get on the last bus or ferry to the ship. Could use more time in port - we had just two half days. Combine that with the $40 Bermuda extortion Travel Authorization, and it's not worth it.
