This is a review of a recent trip on the Holland America Line (HAL) ship Koningsdam. We sailed from Port of Vancouver to Hawaii and visited the four Islands (Maui, Hawaii, Oahu and Kauai) before sailing back to Vancouver.

This adventure should have been a trip along the coast of Norway in 2020, but COVID-19 put an end to that idea. HAL offered us a refund or a future cruise credit, so we opted for the credit, in effect making HAL an interest-free loan for two and a half years. We delayed using our cruise credits as long as possible, and decided to take the Hawaii cruise as we had enjoyed it previously.

Cabin Review

Verandah Stateroom

This time we chose a veranda cabin on deck 7, near the bow. It was compact, and we needed to co-ordinate our movements to avoid collisions.

The bathroom was larger than the one attached to our cabin on the Nieuw Statendam, but the shower lacked the useful wooden platform we found on the sister ship. Because the shower stall does not always drain well, at times the floor tiles can become quite slippery. We sometimes noticed a musty smell in the shower stall, probably caused by the high glass door that prevents good ventilation. We did not find a successful way of keeping the shower door open to improve the ventilation.

Other contributors have commented on the awkward location of the toilet, and we have to agree with them. It is impossible to sit properly on the unit without your left knee hitting the glass wall of the shower! To put this in context; we are two seniors of average build and have good mobility - we cannot imagine how the less mobile or heavier passengers manage!

Our cabin stewards Pit and Lupi were always happy, cheerful and polite – excellent people.
