This was a cruise through the beautiful Rhine River area, and 7 days is a nice length of cruise for someone who just wants to get away for awhile. The first port Basel, Switzerland, and the last port Amsterdam, are great places to add days before and after the cruise. We spent 6 nights before the cruise visiting some of the scenic spots in Switzerland and then boarded the Viking Longboat for a more relaxing hassle-free vacation on the river. The stops on the cruise are all picturesque and the fact that there are included tours at all the cities gives you a good look at all the places. In most ports, there was time before or after your tour to explore the cities further. The staff on this cruise was outstanding! There was a wonderful pianist in the lounge who played music softly enough that you could still visit, and the cruise director ( I think that's what she was) who described the ports every night was just fantastic! Everyone who worked on the ship - servers, front desk people, etc.- was friendly and seemed genuinely happy to be on this ship. In addition, there is a 24 hour coffee and cookie bar! The river boats don't have the amenities that the larger ships do as far as spas, gyms, additional restaurants, but those aren't things I care about. I love that you can always see land and there are no days at sea.
We had a veranda room on the 3rd (upper) floor, and it was small but adequate for a 7 day trip. Pretty small shower. The room stewards were constantly working and tidying up the rooms. If you can afford it, the suites with two rooms are worth it.
