This was our first cruise and I wanted to experience cruising on a smaller scale. We chose Viking for their stellier reputation and I couldn't have been happier with my choice. Everything from booking to the entire on board experience ran like a well oiled machine - not a single hitch. I believe all of Viking's river cruise ships are similar in design, but we felt fortunate to be on the Gymir as it is brand new, 2022 is it's first year of operation. Everything on the ship is thoughtfully designed and laid out. Rooms are compact but comfortable and well appointed. You will not lack for storage space or outlets (including 110V) for all your electronics.
There were 176 passengers on the ship which has a capacity of 200, but it never felt crowded. A seat could always be found in the lounge and dining room. Crew was amazing, so friendly and professional; always willing to patiently answer questions no matter how mundane.
One thing to note: there is no fitness room on a river cruise ship if that is important to you. There simply is not room for one on these compact ships.
Cabin is compact but very well appointed. Viking thought of everything, from the generous number of outlets in the room to the heated floors in the bathroom. Toiletries are generously sized, not the tiny bottles common these days. There was more storage space than we needed or used. Unlike the directions hotels are heading, rooms are cleaned every day.
