We have sailed many times with HAL as well as other lines from Regent and Crystal to NCL and Carnival. HAL has always offered large suites at reasonable cost, but this cruise showed they are cutting corners everywhere. Some examples: Lunch menu in dining room never changes. Dinner there has a very limited menu with changes: additional charges for many items, e.g., shrimp cocktail now $8.50 except on gala night. On gala dinner only three desserts, including no sugar added. Very inconsistent service---took 1.5 hours one day to get lunch even with the none changing menu. Rooms are still large and our steward pair were outstanding. In entertainment area they have no lead singers and are down to 8 dancers on one show and six on the other--no costumes to speak of although they do have a wonderful backlit stage screen. No more production orchestra. Indonesian staff eager to please, but so many new staff and limited numbers so that many are lost trying to do their jobs, i.e., insufficient training. Communications are thin if not existent at best. Little description of entertainment. No features on officers or other staff. They offer what is claimed to be enrichment lectures; however, they are canned lectures, all of which are presented by the cruise director and not by an expert, nor off script by even a syllable. Shore excursions had no HAL staff visible near the buses nor any accompanying the tours. One group of 41 got delayed on return due to road washout in the jungle area so the ship had to leave without them in Costa Rica so it could maintain its appointment to go through the Panama Canal. Turns out part rejoined the cruise two days later in Panama and a very few were sent to Ecuador to rejoin in Aruba 4 days later. These are illustrations of a large number of small problems, none of which is cardinal in its own right, but they do get tiresome on a seventeen day cruise and nothing like we have ever experienced on HAL before. I might add we are in the 3 star category with them which is the level between 100-200 nights.
