We chose this trip because we wanted to travel on a smaller working ship and experience first hand what daily life is like for the people living along the northern coasts of Norway. As our tour leader said very correctly: "this is not a cruise but a sea voyage, the entertainment is outside". And he was right: the magnificent, awe inspiring landscapes, the small quaint towns and villages huddled on the shores, the history of the country, the local way of life .... Stops are frequent but mostly short (15-30 minutes) except when there are excursions planned. The city tours are expensive and you can easily do these on your own using a guide book as the ship docks in the center of most towns and you do not need a bus to get there. Some towns are just that: towns, they do not cater to tourists at all but you can experience how these communities live. The North Cape excursion was well worth the money and not really doable on your own. The evening talks were informative and entertaining, ranging from sea life and local history and people to Norwegian writers, painters and movies. Cabins are basic and small but very clean and comfortable. The food is fantastic, locally sourced and deliciously prepared. The staff is very friendly and serviceable.
If you are looking for a luxury cruise with lots of entertainment and fuss, this is not for you. If you want to be immersed in the landscape you are traveling in, want to learn about the local history and culture, then this is for you. Pack some warm clothes, a pair of hiking boots, bring a good book (or two), install yourself in the panorama lounge on deck 7 and be prepared to have the experience of a life time!
Small, very functional (great shower!), clean and comfortable.
