We wanted to experience a Rhine River cruise. We picked this one due to schedule. As stated above, Viking River cruises still attract an older group of passengers. The best days we had were when we struck out on our own, although the guides were as a group friendly and knowledgeable. We had relied on the My Viking Journey for several months to keep up with travel details. Then when we got on the boat our information disappeared. Because I could retrieve what I needed from old emails we made out. But other passengers seemed lost due to the lack of access to the Viking Journey. It's okay to do that, and I'm sure there's some legitimate management reason for it. But I recommend telling customers to be sure to secure their travel details before getting to Europe. At least they would know what was coming.
There really should be another food option between meals. Some people aren't' hungry at exactly 8:00, 12:30, and 6:30 every day. Just a sandwich or soup option would give those folks an alternative. Also, the group socialization at meals was sometimes dreary. One of the reasons for taking a river cruise is the scenery, especially from the comfort of the stateroom. Many days and night we were moored to another Viking ship so that we had the view out the window of another ship three feet away. I would suggest Viking pay for more slips so that all can have a river view.
Having said all that as a suggestion on how to improve the experience, we had a wonderful time. We may need to wait until we are a little older to book another one. And the entertainment consisted of a piano bar playing soft music. I'm not saying Viking needs a disco, but it really had a retirement community atmosphere to it.
Cabin was wonderful. The air conditioner did not work very well, so we were hot during the night a few times. Our TV did not work most of the time. But our steward was very attentive and helpful.
