American Cruise Line (ACL) has mastered small ship cruising in America; great ships, great themed cruises, better than great food, and wonderful American crews. This cruise focused on the Lewis and Clark Expedition and opening of the Oregon Territory. ACL begins with on-board lectures about what Lewis and Clark did at the next day’s port, this helped set up the guided tours. We had Nez Perce lectures and dancers to give the Native American perspective. The communities along the Columbia have excellent museums, tour guides, were proud of their heritage and happy to share it with us. The ship provides maps and write-ups on each port which helped build the complete picture. Astoria and the mouth of the Columbia were exceptionally well done. Don’t miss the Maritime Museum and Fort Clatsop in Astoria or Mount St Helen and the Pendleton Native American museum!
The ship’s River Lounge were perfect for watching the Columbia and Snake Rivers’ scenery, the busy shore line and shipping and the impressive locks. Something for everyone! The tour of the pilot house and conversation with the Captain about the running of the ship was one of the cruise highlights.
Guest services on this cruise was outstanding with multiple activities scheduled every day, including a technical tips class to help us make better use of our mobile phones, and troubleshoot problems. The ship offered watercolor painting classes which focused on new techniques and the highlights of each port. Evening entertainment was always lively and whenever possible included local musical groups.
Large comfortable cabin with plenty of storage, good reading lights, and big bathroom for a small ship. Wi-Fi was good as was the TV. Housekeeping kept it spick and span.
