Cruising on the Koningsdam in September 2022 was a cruise that had been planned in 2019 and as a result of Covid 19, it kept getting moved. It was a marvellous cruise, the forecasted weather in Alaska was typical, mainly rain and that turned out to be false. We had rain in Juneau and everywhere else it was clear.

Having travelled on six other Holland America ships we found the Koningsdam to be a beautiful ship maintaining the standards usually set by the Holland America fleet. Everything is just where you’d expect it if you’ve travelled with Holland America. Like the other ships we’ve travelled on, just wandering about the Konningsdam is a very pleasant experience. Many paintings and colourful attractions, from bars to music venues to dining areas. The Promenade Deck has a walkaround the ship, plus there are several outside viewing spots.

Dining choices are many, the Main Dining Room would suffice for most, and there are two Gala Dinners in which the dining staff would like you to spruce up a little. You don’t need formal wear just a step up from your normal daily attire. Should you need something a little different you can use the buffet on the Lido deck. If that doesn’t turn your crank try the Drive-In, the Koningsdam burger joint beside the pool which is always a good choice for a small meal. If you are still in the mood for a free smaller meal, try the new York Pizza & Deli. There is a new addition on the Konningsdam, the Dutch Cafe where you can get the pea soup anytime, otherwise, you’d only get pea soup while you are cruising in Glacier Bay (the pea soup is a regular occurrence in all Holland America ships). Specialty coffee is available in the Crowsnest and the Dutch Cafe.

Cabin Review

Verandah Stateroom

Stateroom 11046

This balcony stateroom is a good size for two people, there is plenty of storage space and the luggage will fit under the bed. The shower is great for a tall person. There are a number of previous comments written about the placement of the toilet, but I never found a problem using it. I did find the rectangular sink a little odd but again not a problem. The Stateroom had all the amenities you’d expect. The was an umbrella supplied in the room, which is a desirable item on an Alaska cruise with iffy weather conditions. The TV hosts a variety of options including live network channels and a vast selection of movies (at no charge). The really enjoyed the balcony during our visit that the glacier, the weather was exceptional.

The most important thing about the stateroom was it was clean and well serviced by our two cabin stewards, Novie & Anto. The regular appearance of a towel animal daily was a treat. The bed gave us a pleasant sleep every night.

Port Reviews

Glacier Bay

We have frequently travelled with Holland America and really enjoy travelling up the Inside Passage and will continue to do so while our health remains stable. Glacier Bay has always been the highlight of any trip. This trip was more special because of the ability to visit John Hopkins Glacier.
