We were originally on the Amsterdam to Basel 8/21. This cruise canceled, due to historic low water levels. I had been calling and emailing Uniworld to ask if the trip was going. We were informed that there was rain forecasted and that the sailing was a "go". We flew to London a few days prior and decided to take Eurostar, as we had heard of the horror stories of the Amsterdam airport. The night before our train to Amsterdam, I received an email that the cruise canceled. We were offered the cruise out of Lyon, France or take a cruise latter in the year. We opted to grab a train and go to Lyon, France.
We were thrilled about the new itinerary and the fact that we had a vacation and decided not to leave! When we checked into the boat the general mood was cordial and pleasant, but not concerned about our travels or the cancelation. Our room was downgraded from the previous ship, the staff just shrugged and said they were full. No apology or empathy. We had heard from numerous friends and travel agent that Uniworld, was on a league of its own. We finished our sailing with the thought that the marketing team was very good as this was just an ok experience. It was pleasant but nothing lavish. We spoke with many other guests that had sailed with Uniworld in the past. The general mood was that the crew had lost their spark and it was not as good as a product as other sailings. We were told next time to try SCENIC or EMERALD.
Interior/Staterooms: The rooms, while small were decorated beautiful. Heated bathroom floor. The bathroom had shampoo and body gel in the large pump bottles, attached to the wall of the shower. No individual items except a nail file kit. This does not give an impression of a 5-star hotel, but claiming we are saving plastic waste. Also, no water bottles in the room. Just a large decanter filled with water. They provided small metal refill bottles that left an odd taste when used. There is also no fridge in the room.
