Boarded at Southampton, prebooked ABP parking at half price with MSC discount code, 100 yards walk from car park to cruise terminal. Early priority boarding, minimal queues for luggage drop-off and security. Passports, vaccination status and Covid tests were checked, then cruise card was issued, on-board within 15 minutes. On board staff consistently wore masks throughout. Guests were encouraged to sanitise hands, but no compulsion for masks nor on board temperature tests.

On Virtuosa, Aurea experience (500 guests) have their own evening dining restaurant on lifeboat deck, so no view to speak of, but flexible dining at any time within opening hours. Breakfast and Lunch were available in the rear main dining restaurant, Minuetto. Alternatively, buffet was available throughout day with rotating selection of items.

Rear restaurant, Minuetto, is above the engines and gets busy at peak breakfast / lunch times, so not the quietest nor fastest service. Aurea restaurant (Il Cambo) quieter, with a more relaxed pace of service, the same staff serve you each time, so they got to know drink preferences quickly. Also, worth noting that you can ask for wines not on the menu, if available from the bar and included in your drinks package. (Sadly, my preferred red ran out after the first week and alternatives were not as good.)

Cabin Review

Deck 13 midships, balcony cabin as described; clean and all appliances in working order, swapped pillows out for firmer option, asked for extra hangers. Welcome drinks and chocs in cabin. Cabin was cleaned three times a day with beds made up, day cushions brought out, then later beds turned down at night. Excellent steward service. Did not use room service nor mini bar.

Port Reviews

Lanzarote

MSC Trekking excursion - Take heed of the need for decent hiking shoes. Yes, it's hot, dusty and relentessl windy ! Get up close to the landscape, learning about growing vines and figs in a hostile environment.

Las Palmas (Gran Canaria)

MSC Excursion Tour of Island, brief stops in various locations, enough time for a few photos, but no time too linger.

Lisbon

Head to a Metro station to get a day ticket for public transport. Use the buses! Don't spend time trying to get on the vintage trams, they were gridlocked. Antique elevators were under repair, Art Deco station under scaffolding. Took local buses to Castle, Fort and Explorers monument.

Madeira (Funchal)

Took a local taxi to cliff top and then Monte top station, friendly local driver. Far quicker than queuing for cable car ascent. Tropical gardens pleasant experience with reasonable entry free and cafe prices. Took Gondola down, no queues.

Tenerife

MSC Excursion to Mount Tiede. Excellent information from guide on the volcanic history of the island and the varied landscape. Plenty of time to view the landscape.

Vigo

Half day stop. Climbed to fort for the view. Strolled around old town. Did not take organised excursions further afield.
