This is a two-part review. We have been on several Viking ocean cruises and have enjoyed all of them. However, we will have to consider other cruise options in the future due to the unreasonableness and inflexibility of Viking's administrative policies. FIRST - This Norway/Iceland cruise was excellent. The itinerary was well thought-out, and the ship design, service and food were excellent. We took some of the Viking-offered excursions, but generally had better experiences and got better value from booking private excursions through Viator. Viator uses many of the same tour operators as Viking, but the options and prices are better through Viator. SECOND - We will seriously consider other cruising options in the future due to several of Viking's policies. We had booked a Viking ocean cruise to Alaska for August 2023, and cancelled when Viking demanded full payment 14 MONTHS prior to the sail date. Even though Viking's competitors have substantially shorter full-pay deadlines, Viking refused to extend the deadline and, when I called Guest Services, I was essentially told that "we do it because we want to and because we can." In addition, Viking refused to refund the trip insurance premium, even though we cancelled the trip before full payment was made and before air arrangements were booked, meaning that there was no risk to insure at that point. Essentially, it was free money to the insurance company for assuming no risk. Viking says that it is the insurance company's policy, but as Viking is offering the insurance on its website, Viking has to take some responsibility for exposing its loyal customers to this type of rip-off.
