I've been on two ocean cruises before and had great times on both of them. Viking took everything a step above what I've experienced before. From including tours at each port to amazing food/wine service included with each meal, their service exceeded my expectations. When we saw sales that included free round trip airfare to Europe, we couldn't pass up on the opportunity and I'm glad we didn't. This will be a trip we will remember for the rest of our lives. We loved the service so much that we purchased vouchers to save on future cruises we intend on taking with Viking.
Another thing to note, since we booked the airfare through Viking, when we did have issues with flights, Viking was there to resolve those issues. The morning of our flight I received an email saying our connection from Munich to Prague had been cancelled. I called Viking and they also told me our main flight from Denver to Munich had also been cancelled. This was due to a ground crew strike that was occurring in Germany. Immediately Viking found another route. Unfortunately it was with 3 legs and we would miss most of our 2 day pre-excursion in Prague, but we would still make the cruise. I explained that my wife had significant medical requirements and that the fewer connections the better. They told me they would call back in an hour and see what they could figure out. An hour later, they called back and found us flights through London. While it was an 8.5 hour layover, we would still make it to Prague late in the evening on our original date. We were grateful and accepted that itinerary.
Our cruise took us down the Main, Rhine and Moselle rivers. We did miss out on one of our excursions because the Rhine was so low that we couldn't dock at that port. We are working with Viking now to get that reimbursed or credited to a future cruise. I have no worries that they will make that right.
We booked the cheapest room we could get in order to keep the price down. We knew we would be below the water line with a small window and were fine with that. What we didn't realize was that the elevator does not go to the lower floor. My wife had recent foot surgery and while she can do stairs and short walks, we didn't want to overwhelm her with too much physical exertion on the ship so she could enjoy as much of the excursions as possible.
The staff onboard was amazing, after a day or two one of them pulled us aside and asked if we would be interested in a free upgrade to a floor that the elevator does serve so we didn't have to continuously carry the wheelchair up and down the stairs. Of course, we couldn't refuse. We went from a lower level to a room with a full veranda. Not only that, but after we repacked our bags, they even moved everything to the new room for us.
