I have just returned from a 14 night cruise around the Mediterranean on Queen Mary 2. Whilst we have travelled many times on Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria this was my first time on QM2.

One cannot help but be impressed by the sheer size, spaciousness and quality of the interior of the ship, evoking the grandeur of past ocean-going liners. The Royal Court theatre is quite impressive compared to QE and QV. The interior was well maintained and generally in very good condition, as one would expect following its refit in 2016. The exterior was showing signs of wear, although there was plenty of maintenance/repair work taking place most days.

Overall there were relatively few changes due to Covid – the most notable were the scrapping of the Captain’s cocktail and the World Club receptions (which I am not really a fan of anyway). Food and drinks in the Kings Court (equivalent to the Lido on QE and QV) was served for you, buffet style – presumably to minimise contamination of utensils etc. Service and quality of food were to Cunard’s usual very high standards, although I felt that the portion sizes in the Britannia Restaurant were larger, and sometimes the presentation was a little clumsy. The sail away ‘parties’ were generally a bit bland and lacked atmosphere and the entertainment staff were conspicuous by their absence.

Cabin Review

Balcony, sheltered

BC grade cabin, balcony, mid-ships, high level (Deck 11). Spotlessly cleaning well maintained as usual. Plenty of wardrobe space, drawers etc. Tea/coffee kit in room. Penhaligon toiletries. Air conditioning was OK, not as good as on QV and QE. Larger bathroom compared to QE and QV and better laid out - and a proper full size shower (so no more getting entangled in the shower curtain every time you turn round). Balcony was OK - but quite a bit of rust on the steelwork. Maintenance required.
