Princess does it right, even with the issues that Covid brought to our cruising world (and the world in general). I completed all required information on the web version of the cruise personalizer as I had read that many were having issues with the app on their phone or tablet. Once I completed all that I could I then downloaded the medallion app to my phone (the latest version) and finished what I needed to do. I have learned to research all aspects of the cruise you are choosing as it truly helps you to be more relaxed and as stress free as possible once you set foot on that glorious cruise ship.

Embarkation was smoother because of the "green lane" status on my app. Although I was surprised that the staff checking us in did not even care to see that QR code on my phone. This was in Vancouver and they only asked for our passports, Covid vaccination cards, Negative Covid tests (done in the time frame asked for), and the medallion that we had ordered via postal service weeks before. The new version of the old key card that is going to start a trend soon!

We had chosen a later check in and we're on the ship by 2 pm or so. That meant our room was ready and our luggage was in the room when we went in the door. Our medallions worked fine to greet us on the screen outside the door and unlock the door for us. Our room steward was right there to say hello & introduce himself. He was fantastic the entire cruise & kept our room spotless. Then it was off to explore the Majestic and get some lunch at the buffet.

Cabin Review

Balcony

We had a BB Balcony Cabin on Deck 9. It was mid forward on the Starboard side which was nice in the ports. We pulled in on the starboard side which gave us a great view coming into the ports and of where we docked or anchored. The beds are a little harder than we prefer but since we were on a cruise ship on vacation, we slept pretty well. The closets are huge with plenty of hangers and the light near the closet goes on automatically when you walk up to it. There are also subtle lights under the lips of the side tables near the bed. They come on when you get in and out of bed which is very nice in a dark room. The flat TV is great on the wall opposite the bed for best viewing and is not in the way.

Port Reviews

Ketchikan

We loved Ketchikan and the Lumberjack show. It was funny, entertaining and fun to watch. The axe throwing competition afterwards was fun to try and learn. My hubby was the best thrower but he is quite strong. I just could not get the gist of it in that small amount of time to learn. We did not have time to eat in Ketchikan but stopped at several shops for gifts, tshirts and other trinkets. The weather was perfect & we watched part of the local 4th of July parade. It did not rain which made the day much more enjoyable.

Juneau

We loved Juneau and went to see the Mendenhall Glacier and then the outdoor Salmon bake. I did this excursion with my dad in 2008 and this was a tribute to him as he passed away last December. The glacier is incredible & the glacier center is full of history & unique items to purchase. We supported the center as much as we could afford to & took many pictures. The salmon bake was as delicious as I remember & the brown sugar/melted butter glaze is so yummy. Even if one does not like Salmon that glaze works great on the home made cornbread served in the buffet area. Of course one must try the Alaskan Amber beer (if you are of age & like beer) as it is one of my favorite beers and not available to us at home (in upstate NY).

Skagway

I love Skagway but it has changed so much since 2008 when I was there last! We did the sled dogs, panning for gold and the Train. We loved it all but the gold panning is geared more for small kids. It was fun to learn the history and the process but I was a little taken aback by the high sales pitch of buying more gold flakes to add to your "findings". It was definitely a way to make money, maybe support the place but a little pricey for what we got. The sled dogs are incredible and I loved learning about their training, care and how hard the Ididarod race really is. We were surprised that the dogs do not look like the huskies usually shown on TV or in movies. We just wish there was more time to interact with the puppies as we had close to 50 in our group including small kids, with only 5 puppies to pass around for 30 minutes. My hubby held one and I was able to get some pictures so that made us happy. The highlight was the train ride though - we loved it. I can't imagine the old gold rushers walking that trail up to the Yukon though.
