My wife and I took an overnight cruise on the Margaritaville Paradise to Freeport, Bahamas at the end of June 2022. We were expecting an all-immersive Jimmy Buffet experience: Jimmy’s music piped throughout the ship, steel drum band, bars that looked like Tiki Huts, Island cuisine, and a Caribbean vibe. What we got was a tired former MSC Italian cruise ship, staterooms with European outlets, Thermostats in Celsius, Elevators which announce the floor in Italian and then English, and lounges with a mid-century New York nightclub feel. The food was below average and very basic. Phrases from Jimmy’s songs were stenciled on the ship’s walls and in the staterooms, but the few Adirondack chairs on the retail deck weren’t Margaritaville chairs, just the typical Adirondack chair. The casino had old slot machines (no Margaritaville slots were to be seen). We ordered the 10-drink for $99 beverage package but didn’t realize that bottles of water were included as one of the drinks. The evening show featuring Jimmy’s characters and songs was great. Congrats to Nathan and the cast. Overall, there was just not a lot of entertainment. I find it difficult to believe that this ship was allowed to set sail without Jimmy taking a hard look at it; something went very wrong. In the future if I want a Margaritaville experience, I’ll just listen to the Jimmy’s music.
