Sail Date: Jun 2022

We chose this cruise because we had travelled with Emerald before and wanted to explore the Rhine region. The itinerary was from Amsterdam to Basel and our cruise was the first of the season. A high percentage of the crew was new to river cruising and this showed in the quality of service in the restaurant - no shortage of enthusiasm and food quality was good but lack of training was evident.

It was noticeable as well that berthing positions allocated to us compared unfavourably with those occupied by other ships, being unattractive visually and far from the attractions we had come to see. Departure times were invariably tight and, although the tours offered were professionally organised they often had the appearance of being rushed because of bussing requirements to get back on board.

This cruise contains attractive and interesting ports of call but needs redesigning to provide more time and opportunity for self-exploration onshore and less daylight time travelling on the water. As an example, arrival in Cologne at 2pm is inadequate to do justice to such an important city.
