We had this cruise booked from back in mid 2020 to celebrate my wife's retirement in 2022. When we were advised of the itinerary change due to the war in Ukraine we had a long discussion regarding whether we still took the cruise or rebooked - our reason for booking was St Petersburg as neither of us had visited Russia. We made the decision to go ahead with the revised "Scenic Scandinavia" itinerary despite Poland being the only country we had not visited.
We were not disappointed. It was some years since either of us had cruised but the overall Viking experience was exceptional and far exceeded anything we had experienced cruising before. The Viking Star is finished to the highest standard and the food and service were exceptional. The tours were well structured despite them having to be organised last minute due to the route changes.
Highlight of the places to go was Gdansk and somewhere we have said we will go back to for a weekend (the highest praise in our world).
All cabins on the Viking Star had a sea view and, I believe, a veranda. As this was a special occasion, we pushed the boat out (no pun intended) and booked a Penthouse Junior Suite which was very nice. Everything is catered for in the suite and we needed nothing. It was spacious and even if you were on a longer trip it would not have felt cramped. The beds are amazing and the best I have slept on when on a cruise (and better than most hotels by far).
