We have been on a total of 6 cruises, 3 of which were with Holland America. The most recent trip was a 21 day Fort Lauderdale to Vancouver April 24 to May 15. We felt the itinerary offered a good mix of sea days and shore time. The food in the dining room was excellent and only one night did we have a waiter that needed more training. The room steward we had worked hard to keep us happy. Room service was generally poor this entire trip.
It felt like we were on a grand mystery tour. The information sheets contained little of use. The app and the tv did not make up for the lack of written details. There was no daily weather forecast. A short overview of where we were going or stopping would have been helpful. We’ve always had sufficient information but not this time.
A friend travelled with us, fully vaccinated and wearing a mask, she took every precaution. If an elevator was busy, she walked. We did notice many people did not wear masks and it wasn’t until about the final week that Holland America started telling us to “mask up.” Just over a week into the cruise she caught covid. Surely Holland America should have planned a bit better for covid cases. It was no surprise that some guests would come down with it. She was offered a small bottle of cough syrup and nothing else. If you wanted Tylenol, Advil, cough drops etc. you were simply out of luck. The room service was appalling! Food arrived cold, at random times. One evening she waited two hours and finally called to complain… a challenge in itself as you were on hold forever… only to be told they’d lost her order and the kitchen that meal would come from was now closed. Bamboo utensils were provided. Ever tried to cut anything with a bamboo knife? Not possible. Bamboo spoons have no depth so can’t be used for soup. She had a bottle of red wine in the dining room which room service could not find. They sold her a new one. Surely the replacement should have been comped. Very tacky.
