We took the Viking European River Cruise of two weeks during the second week of May. It was excellent in all respects, including the weather. Having taken a Viking Pacific Ocean Cruise of 31 days in January, I was impressed then with the daily Covid-19 testing, the accommodations, activities, and the training of the crew. The same high level of experiences was evident in our river cruise of two weeks. As with the previous ocean cruise, the passengers were mostly retired, in the 65-85 year range, and very congenial. Having traveled independently in this same region, I thought that would be a refresher course in Europe 101, but I was wrong. My wife and I acquired an immense amount of knowledge about the destinations, as the guides were very informative. Viking's air and transfer arrangements were generally seamless. However, In the Amsterdam airport on the return, there was a 4-hour line to go through a carry-on baggage check before boarding a plane. Evidently, many airports in Europe are experiencing a similar situation due to a labor shortage. I feel that Viking should have warned passengers and offered transportation to a less impacted airport. Although we endured the line, we missed our flight. To Viking's credit, the HOTLINE was able to book us on alternative flights. Our itinerary was from Budapest to Amsterdam, in retrospect, reversing the direction might have avoided this situation.

Cabin Review

Veranda Superior

Although about half the size of a Viking ocean ship Veranda, this was perfectly adequate for a two-week river cruise. To avoid excessive walking, book a cabin near the center of the river boat (201,301).
