Sail Date: May 2022

We were on this same ship pre-Covid to Australia and New Zeeland, and it is everything wonderful that we remembered! Lectures from University professors on Geology (fascinating in Alaska), History, & Astronomy helped us to understand the mountains, trials and tribulations of the early Gold Rush people, native Alaskan peoples and cultures and modern day roles these key cities in Alaska play. The beds are super comfortable, the rooms, all with balconies with table and chairs and floor to ceiling sliding doors brought the outdoor views right into our room. We saw all sorts of wildlife: Orca and Humpback whales, dolphins, sea otters, and all sorts of bird life.

We took the optional excursion (worth every penny) that took us out on a smaller boat from Seward to the Kenai Fjords National Park and saw amazing glaciers calving, and sea lions sunning on the rocks, whales, all up close and personal with a nice box lunch served (vegetarian available), and a bottomless cup of coffee.

The other options excursion we took was the narrow gauge train ride up to White Pass at the border with Canada. The views as we went up the gorge of the rushing river and sometimes sheer cliffs down to the river were spectacular, and the views ahead toward the snow-capped mountains up at the Pass were beautiful.

Cabin Review

All cabins on Viking Ocean cruises have balconies, none are 'inside rooms' or rooms with just a window or porthole. The rooms have a king size bed with luxury linens, double closet (with slippers and robes for your use while on board) large wall-mounted TV visible from the 2 chairs and the bed, a desk with another chair, and a coffee table. The balcony has a table and 2 chairs and a glass railing with a wooden top edge, so you can see well from your room. The bathroom has a sink high-end chrome fixtures, counters on both sides of the sink, and on both sides of the counter vertical shelves, and below on each side is a drawer and a shelf below that and a wastebasket in the cabinet under the sink. The shower also has high end chrome fixtures which allow you to leave the temperature set where you like it so every time you hope in the shower and turn the water on, it is always the perfect temp because that handle is independent of the on/off handle - a nice luxury touch. The bathroom also has a heated floor that you can set the temperature on.
