Having travelled with Emerald before (2014) and Because I love the Moselle & Rhine rivers, it was an obvious choice. However certain aspects were a severe disappointment. Day 6 Trier, awoke moored in a commercial dock next to a scrapyard, 15 miles from Trier, hardly much chance of a stroll ashore after the official tour. Day 7 Bernkastle, except it was Traben Trabach, 30 minutes by coach from Bernkastel. Regularly, organised excursions arrived back at the boat with totally inadequate time to shower and change for a meal. Table service at meals was poor with courses being partly cleared before everyone had finished and some staff were downright rude.
Added to all this a cancelled flight on our return and a 7 hour delay, plus 90 minutes wait in baggage reclaim. Then on the morning after, testing positive for covid (along with others) caught without doubt on the excursion coaches where many were coughing and there was no requirement for masks.
While you can't fault the scenery and the towns are beautiful, Emerald are clearly not yet ready to resume their cruises.
The cabin was fine, the cleaning staff were exceptional. The decor is a little tired compared to my previous trip when the ship was brand new. But it was all clean and tidy.
Bernkastel is a lovely town, a bit warm when we were there (36c). Plenty of bars and cafes and the people that we met were smiling and helpful. It's just a pity that we were moored so far away.
Lovely old town, also a bit warm when we were there, but plenty of cafes and bars. Well worth the visit. Pity that we were moored in a commercial dock 20 miles or so from the city.
