Sail Date: Jun 2022

We had previously sailed on a Viking river cruise, in 2016, and had a great experience. In early 2021 we decided to book the Paris to Zurich cruise At that time the pandemic seemed to be waning, but eighteen months later variants were causing cases to rise, even among those who were vaxed and boosted. Still, we were reassured by Viking’s safety claims so we got on the boat in Trier.

Quite frankly, their protocols turned out to be worthless. At the introductory meet and greet the tour director made a big point of telling us that everyone on the boat — passengers, crew and staff — were fully vaxed and boosted. Daily Covid testing would be administered; anyone testing positive would be isolated. It all sounded great . . . until it wasn’t.

After a few days, ominous announcements started coming over the intercom (“Will the passengers in cabin 123 please report to reception”). People started disappearing. Finally, the cruise director confessed that five parties had a member test positive, These unfortunates had been put ashore to quarantine for five days, per German requirement. Oddly, after this announcement the daily testing stopped; perhaps Viking feared that, if they kept it up, the boat would be empty before they reached Switzerland.
