We selected the Rhine Getaway cruise because we liked the itinerary. While the Viking website heading for this cruise states, "Castles and Cathedrals," we visited cathedrals and medieval towns on our land tours but saw castles only one day and that was from the ship as it sailed the Rhine River from one port to another. We had favorite stops: Kinderdijk with its windmills, the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, and Strasbourg.

The Rhine, from Amsterdam to Basel, requires significant sailing time to make each port. We felt that our time in each town was limited by the ship's sailing schedule. While we were able to explore on our own in Strasbourg and Cologne, we would have liked to be able to explore the other medieval towns longer than the short time allowed.

One evening there was an optional dinner in town at a German restaurant. it was an additional cost of $99.00 per person and included transportation to the restaurant, the meal with beer and wine, and a singer who interlaced German songs with YMCA, Elvis songs, and the like. I cannot recommend this option. The food was unexceptional. There was store bought sliced wheat bread in the bread basket, bologna for an appetizer, and sliced pork and potatoes for the main course. We wished we had stayed on the ship for dinner. In fact, the ship did have a "Taste of Germany" evening dinner one night and we enjoyed the variety of German flavors.

Cabin Review

The cabin is tight on walking room but had good storage for clothing and personal items. The bed and pillows are comfortable though not exceptional. Housekeeping did a good job tidying up each day.
