( 1) The wind went WOOOO ... WOOOO ... WOOOO through the balcony door all night the first night. Couldn't sleep, so we called the front desk, but nobody came. Reported it to the cabin steward the next morning, nobody came. Finally went to front desk and they sent somebody who told us nobody had told HIM to come. He put on white foam tape which helped but three days later the sound was back and this time they simply put on duct tape. This solved the problem but also made it impossible to open the door for the next three days. No compensation offered other than to move us to an INSIDE cabin.

(2) The toilet wouldn't flush one day; we were told that some kind of motor was worn out and needed to be replaced. At least they fixed that.

(3) The ship moved EXTREMELY slow, regardless of weather. We arrived late at the first port, they cut short every other port and we missed Victoria, Canada altogether with no compensation offered (other than checking in with a foreign port, nobody got to leave the ship). We arrived eleven hours late into Seattle, requiring airfare change at extra cost, again with no hint of compensation. The ship's slowness may be related to an incident in Glacier Bay in which I watched the props stir up silt as the ship moved back and forth, left and right for a good hour. As a result, we saw very little in Glacier Bay.

Port Reviews

Glacier Bay

The ship apparently got "stuck" at the end, near a small glacier, and spent about an hour trying to get loose (prop wash and silt was visible as we kept moving left and right). This one glacier and another small glacier we passed by on the way out were all we saw, so it's hard to say if this was a good port or not.

Icy Strait

We took the gondola to the top of the mountain and got some good photos. Beware the cost: Two people cost $106, making those expensive photos.

Ketchikan

"Alaska Lodge Adventure and Seafeast" was absolutely excellent and the best thing on the cruise (even though due to the time in port, we had our seafeast for breakfast at 9:00 a.m.). They took us out on a small boat and we saw eagles, sea otters and dolphins, although IMO if you want to see Alaskan wildlife, you're better off watching YouTube videos because it's not going to be visible except for a very few short seconds. Next, we went on a boardwalk back into the forest, which was surprisingly interesting and fun. It was nice to actually see the interior and the guide explained what we were seeing. Last, we had the "seafeast" and it was indeed a feast. Really, really good. Dungeness crabs, clams, wild-caught shrimp, corn and potatoes. Delicious!

Sitka

"Alaska 4x4 Nature Safari" was also a very good experience. We saw little wildlife because the ATVs we drove probably scared them off, but it was fun to drive and the scenery was fine. The guide stopped and explained things regularly and it was generally just good to get out and breathe the fresh air.

Skagway

We took the White Pass & Yukon Railway, of course. The trip was fine and very scenic, but it was simply an "up to the border and back" trip because we were unable to enter Canada due to some kind of Canadian restriction. It was still a good trip, but it would have been better if it could have been extended into Canada, because then we would have both seen more and also would have returned by bus on the highway to see different sights. The town of Skagway was also pretty good. There were lots of interesting shops, much better than the average for a cruise port.

Victoria

Due to the slow speed of the ship (engine problems?), NCL kept cutting back our time there: Originally set for 7:00 p.m. to midnight (which was already ridiculous), NCL first reduced it to 8:00 p.m. to midnight, then ultimately arrived after 8:00 so the Canadian authorities wouldn't clear them until 8:00 the next morning -- which is why nobody got to get off the ship and we ended up arriving in Seattle eleven (11) hours late. The only reason we even stopped in Victoria was so NCL could say that we went to a foreign port. This sucked.
