Trip was absolutely amazing with pre-cruise excursion to Prague. We have taken aver 30 ocean cruises, but this was our first river cruise and Viking did not disappoint. Cruise was also referred to as the ABC (Another Big Castle/Church) Tour!

Our cause of stress was COVID testing, so I will discuss this first. Viking required us to have COVID test prior to boarding flight overseas. However, no one asked to see COVID test results prior to boarding flight or when we arrived at our pre-cruise excursion hotel in Prague. Likewise, on our return flight no one asked to see US required COVID test results at airport for return flight or US Customs upon landing back in the US. Viking had us take a PCR (spit) test the first morning after arrival at Prague Hotel. A rapid antigen test was performed by Viking immediately upon arrival on Mimir longship in Budapest before being allow to go to cabin. Daily PCR (spit) tests were performed for the first 3 days, then went to every other day (with spit test tubes needing to be turned in by 8 am). You could definitely see the stress on people’s faces the first week, especially when early on the cruise, while eating lunch, see saw the Hotel Manager escort a couple of the vessel due to positive COVID test. Stress definitely decreased after first week as no significant COVID outbreaks occurred. Prior to leaving the Mimir, a senior Viking rep indicated that 4 people had tested positive resulting in 8 people (4 couples) being removed from vessel. Overall, Europeans are definitely over COVID mask and testing requirements. Only a very small number of people were observed wearing outside and masking was only required inside in certain ports. In fact, most tour guides informed us that masks were no longer required. My wife and I chose to wear our masks whenever in a crowd primarily due to Vikings COVID testing. Now on to the cruise!

Being my first river cruise, my only point of comparison was with that of cruise ships we sailed. As a result, we were initially concerned over the lack of space for activities outside cabin proper. However, we found that space was more than adequate in the Restaurant and Aquavit Terrace for meals and in the Aquavit Lounge. These spaces were well appointed in a more modern décor and overall looked like a new vessel.

Cabin Review

Veranda Stateroom

We were in Stateroom which was a Veranda B stateroom/cabin. In general, space was adequate, since due to itinerary, we spent very little time in stateroom except to sleep and change for dinner. Plenty of storage in closet, as well as 6 drawers outside closet. Suitcases fit under bed, which we used to store soiled clothing. Only issue was with the size of shower, which was a strange geometry being narrower in back of shower and could be a problem for larger persons. Internet was spotty based on location, but this was expected. We changed from a french balcony to a balcony stateroom, since we enjoyed sitting out early mornings and during evenings prior to turning in for the night; however, we found that we rarely sat out on the balcony and in retrospect could have saved the money from upgrade.
