Sail Date: Mar 2022
Cabin: Deluxe Balcony

Embarkation was delayed due to several cases of coronavirus on the previous transatlantic cruise so they had a deep clean. We arrived early and had seats in the terminal but once the lounge was full they stopped checking passengers in and some waited 3 hours outside the terminal building! We were fast tracked as soon as embarkation started and enjoying lunch at the International café at 1.30pm.

The ship is beautiful, especially the Piazza which was often the location for live gentle music which was very calming and ballroom dancing which I found surprisingly enjoyable to watch. The staff were always cleaning and polishing and everything sparkled in the lights. We enjoyed the Take 5 lounge with jazz music, the Vista Lounge which was the elite lounge for canapés 5pm-7pm and the location of the Captains Circle party. No champagne waterfall or balloon drop any more.

I won $150 voucher at the spa raffle held in the gym on embarkation day. This is only valid for signature treatments however so you still need to put money towards the treatment plus tip which was 20%.

Cabin Review

Deluxe Balcony

Small bathroom with shower curtain and washing line. Two large bottles fixed to the wall (shower gel and shampoo/conditioner) and a ledge you can put your foot on which I’ve never seen before but great idea.

Two large bottle of soap and body lotion by the sink and 3 corner shelves.

Huge open wardrobe (doorless) and multiple four shelves in the safe cupboard. Bedside tables both had two drawers and an open shelf above.

Tea and coffee making facilities, empty fridge and English plug adapter provided. Hairdryer is in the drawer above the fridge.

Stateroom television was great for ordering food, asking for tray to be collected, ordering bathrobes and of course watching the Wake show! Lots and lots of complementary films unlike some cruise lines and drinks packages are included with stateroom orders!!! Again unlike other cruise lines.

Balcony has glass front, two chairs and a table and the balcony light is behind the curtain on the right. The balcony door is very heavy.

The cabin has a convertible sofa and the bed is extremely comfortable.

The door light goes green as you approach it wearing your medallion to show that it has unlocked so you can walk straight it!

Port Reviews

Excellent ship tour around the island. We had free time in “Little Venice” by the sea. I even had a paddle and had time for a swim if I wanted. Fantastic guide and tour.

If you are travelling with children then Loro Parque is a great day out.

For water park enthusiasts. Siam park is the best and largest water park in Europe.

Very easy to do DIY. Mum wanted to try the Pastel de Nata custard tart and we found a little patisserie/café practically opposite the port and it only cost €5 for the two of us!!

The main square is an easy walk just turn left out of the port. The trams are great to visit the Belem Tower or old quarter but beware of pick pockets.

Madeira (Funchal)

Madeira is a beautiful island. We were unlucky with our tour experience but know from previous visits how lovely the island is.

I highly recommend the cable car and toboggan tour that we took on a previous cruise. If you want to visit Blandy’s then DIY is a better experience and much cheaper.

Very easy to do DIY. The café right by the port is excellent value. We ordered coffee and water and got cake and crisps for free!! We stopped off on the way back to the ship for hot chocolate and churros. If you go up the steep hill you will be rewarded with a little church in the old town. Not possible this trip due to mobility issues. The shopping mall next to the port is extremely expensive for souvenirs so it is worth looking further afield.

On a previous visit we did a tour to Santiago de Compostela which is definitely worth a visit.

Although we stayed on board this time we previously did the camel ride and volcanic tour which I highly recommend.

Excellent cruise port which is miles away from London so don’t be fooled. We drove up to the departure lounge where our suitcases were taken out of our car for us and taken away, then our car was driven away ready for collection on disembarkation day. So easy
