We had previously been on four Viking river cruises, all positive experiences. This was our first Viking ocean experience. It had been rescheduled twice prior to our actual embarkation. The ship itself is of a decor much to our liking, Scandinavian and somewhat spare in appearance without being stark. The staff was unfailingly polite and helpful. The food was always prepared very well and was always presented artfully. We were required to submit a saliva test upon entry and we were required to remain in our cabin until the test results were determined. But they had stocked our room with plenty of food and a bottle of wine to enjoy while we unpacked and waited for our test results. We had to submit saliva samples daily after that. We took advantage of the included tours and found them to be okay but not outstanding. Part of the explanation for that was the Norwegian government at that time was still restricting cruise passengers to the organized tours so we had no opportunity to explore on our own. The ship is staffed with resident lecturers. In our case a historian, an astronomer, and a biologist. We attended several of their lectures and found them to be very enjoyable. We did attend one stage show. While not a big draw for us the entertainers were certainly capable musicians, vocalists, and dancers. We were unable to visit two of the scheduled ports due to sea conditions. Other comments include: We found it quite helpful that they provide a washer and dryer for the use of the guests. You could of course use the ship laundry service but being able to do your own laundry was highly convenient. We did use their pressing service which was included with our cabin selection. My wife remarked that this was the first cruise we'd been on where she had leftover drawer space after we had unpacked. Viking did attempt to the extent they could to be helpful about travel restrictions and requirements in the countries through which our routing took us. Those restrictions and requirements were rather fluid (perhaps an understatement) so we did encounter a few difficulties, most notably transiting Brussels on the way home. Overall, a very good experience which we will be following up with another Viking ocean cruise this coming June.
