This was a last minute bargain - 5 days to get ready - but it was just fantastic. Despite the frustration of all the tests and forms to be completed we thoroughly enjoyed our time in the Caribbean. We were offered a really cut price rate complete with Premium drinks package, and couldn't believe our luck when it all worked out perfectly. The islands were beginning to open up and despite ship's advice, we were able to and allowed to use private tours to see around.
The ship apparently only had 800 passengers. This meant that the atmosphere is some bars was a bit dull, but on the plus side, covid didn't worry us at all.
We got return home tests on board for a reasonable 25 Euro, and the only panic was at Barbados airport when the wifi was too weak to complete the UK passenger locator forms. After half an hour of cursing our luck, the BA staff kindly allowed us to access the staff wifi and we were done in a few minutes.
We had an internal cabin - bit risky if you have to isolate! But it was great, and we didn't have to see how it would feel after being locked in for a week.
Because of reviews on this forum we took a public bus for 2 dollars to Nelson's dockyard and then a boat taxi over to Galleon beach. Worked out very well, got a good perspective of quite a bit of the island. Big contrasts of wealth!
We were told that private tours were forbidden, but by accident found out that this was the first day where tours were allowed. We had tried to book ships tours, but they were all full, which turned out to be a blessing because we joined a local taxi tour and had a great time. 3 hour tour of the island, town, mountains, rain forest.
Another local taxi tour, open bus, which covered the whole island or so it seemed. Nice stop off on Cane Garden Bay beach for an hour. Brilliant!
We spent 2 or three hours on the main beach opposite the cruise terminal. Then got a local bus to Maho beach. A fellow cruiser who had been there the week before told us that they has only seen small Cesna type planes landing in the morning time, but we checked the airport landing schedule and timed it to see some of the big transatlantic flights landing right over our heads. Its a bit of a cliche but when you're right underneath the 14.38 from Paris Orly its quite the spectacle. Loved it.
