My husband and I took Viking to Egypt and Jordan in early November. We spent 3 nights in Cairo, 7 nights on Viking Ra cruising along the Nile, 1 night back in Cairo, and 4 nights in post extension to Jordan. We booked this trip because so many people have said that now was the right time to see the ancient monuments without the usual crowd. They were partially right. Places like Karnak, Luxor Temple, and Valley of the Kings were crowded with like-minded tourists like us, but other temples were less crowded. So, we made the right decision after all. The weather was perfect (it was in the high 90’s) and the ancient monuments were far more SPECTACULAR in person than anything we’ve seen in the books or on TV!
We had 30 people on this trip, with 14 continuing to Jordan (us included). We were divided into two groups – one group belonged to Ahmed Debbees and the second group belonged to Ihab Farag -- both are experienced Egyptologists. (We belonged to Ahmed’s group.) Many of our fellow passengers are well-seasoned travelers. Conversations were easy going and centered on everyone’s past travels. We shared many helpful tips with one another.
Viking ran this itinerary like a well-oiled machine! They’ve been doing this for quite some time and the efficiency shows. From the moment we arrived at the Cairo airport, Viking rep was there to greet us. And to the last day when we left Jordan, someone was there to guide us. Viking Ra is a beautiful, comfortable, and luxurious ship! Service and food were up to the Viking standard and, of course, ours as well since that’s the reason why we booked with them. We travel with Viking quite often. Unfortunately, on our last trip, we had an unpleasant experience that kept us away for a few years. I will share that experience at the end of this review so as not to detract from this review.
