Have you ever wondered what it would be like if a nursing home and an Olive Garden could produce offspring? Well, wonder no longer: the AmaSiena is the floating progeny of this partnership of geriatrics and mediocrity.

Unlike others on this venerable site, as a first-time river cruiser, I am unable to compare the foibles of multiple cruise lines or routes. So, this review will not help you deduce the cruise you should choose if you want the "best _____'' available on the market; rather, it's for those who--like I was--might be thinking, 'this sounds kinda neat, maybe the laid-back-pace is something I could dig. ' Hopefully, the following paragraphs will successfully convey the experience of what a week sailing with AmaWaterways down the often industrial--occasionally picturesque--Rhine river would be like for you.

Picture it: Basel, November 2021. Our "Christmas Markets on the Rhine" cruise departed from the Dreiländereck dock, a narrow spit of land that straddles Switzerland, France, and Germany. In reality, this rather romantic geographical concept is quickly dashed when you realize your location looks like the kind of place one may purchase illicit drugs, a good time from those practicing the oldest profession, or practically the best place to start yet another seven-story scrap heap.
