I feel compelled to write a review since nobody has reviewed since Viking changed it's policy on allowing passengers to be free in port. We found out on our 10 October departure from Athens to Venice that we were only the 2nd cruise to be allowed free reign in port. We were thrilled. Starting pre-cruise in Crete we shopped alot knowing it was possible we wouldn't be allowed off the ship. But we were! The only noticeable thing about covid was the daily testing which we appreciated and also having to wear masks while onboard except while eating or drinking. Masks were optional outside on tours. There were 450 passengers on board this 10 day cruise and the service was exceptional. We also found out that 2 cruises after ours was going to be Viking's first experiment being fully booked.
One other note regarding all of the PCR pre-embarkation testing, nobody asked for that information and because we were coming from our own land excursion in Crete we had to pay for a very expensive PCR test. Disappointing it wasn't necessary since they were performed a covid test as soon as we got onboard!
We have been on many different ships over the last 15 years and the only negative in my mind was the drink package. We opted for this as we had an FCC credit that needed to be used prior to boarding. As wine drinkers we didn't see alot of extra value, although on day 5 when we dined at the Chef's Table we spoke with the head sommelier who explained that all specialty wines are available in all venues. That did not get communicated to some of the bars apparently. In any case if you drink hard liquor there is definitely added value in the package. Also, you are allowed to bring your own wine onboard.
