We just completed a set of back-to-back cruises on Liberty OTS, it being our fourth set of back-to-back cruises on Royal Caribbean. We did Western then Eastern Caribbean. Much has already been written about the ports so I'll confine my comments here to our experiences onboard. We are Diamond members closing in on Diamond Plus status and are a couple in our fifties and early sixties, travelling this time by ourselves. Like we have found so many times before, the ship is wonderful- beautifully designed, easy to navigate- and the crew is terrific. A special notice and thank you to the Diamond Lounge staff - Mario the concierge, Bogdan, Rohan, and Melbourne - who all made our 2 week stay with them extra nice! Another nice touch from RCI was the phone call approx. 2 weeks before our cruises just wishing us a great cruise. Also while onboard each week guest relations called us to see how we were doing and ask if there was anything they could help us with. I believe these calls were because of our consecutive cruises. And on turnaround day we had a special lunch in the dining room just for all the consecutive cruisers - approx. 30 people this time. We had a wonderful cruise but all was not perfect; we actually now question whether we will cruise again with RC and here's why: the quality of the food has deteriorated to a point that really impacts our cruising experience. I hate to have to write that but the only really good meals we had were in Portofinos; we ate there 4 times. Everything we had there was delicious! (note that the menus for both Chops and Portofinos have changed and some of our favorites are no longer there.) We did eat in Chops but were so dissatisfied with the meal we cancelled our 2nd reservation. The food tasted ok but was not hot and the halibut my husband had was a very skimpy portion. He actually went to the Windjammer afterwards for a second meal! Breakfasts in the Windjammer were fine due to just being the typical breakfast foods and we always found something we liked. Lunch and dinner in there weren't as good. We did not eat in the main dining room this trip; we wanted a more casual trip so I cannot comment on that dining venue. We are not fussy or gourmet diners; however, having sailed with RC since 1994 I can see and taste a definite decline in the food quality. For instance Chops advertises it's the best steakhouse on the high seas but the grade of beef isn't prime. You can taste the difference. We were not the only people who felt this way; one couple went so far as to meet with the head chef and the dining room manager to discuss this drop in quality. And we told Mario the concierge how we felt as well. Did this ruin our cruise? Absolutely NOT! But we have decided to try another cruise line and have already booked a cruise in Europe next year. Will we be back to RC? Maybe, maybe not. While food is only part of a vacation experience it's a big part; if we find another line with good ships, great crews and better food then we probably won't be back. We think one is out there.
