The honest truth from a Virgin Voyages customer who paid for their cruise (not a comp) on their Mermaiden Voyage October 6th 2021.
Brief summary - Virgin Voyages has a lot they need to change particularly with entertainment to compete with even the most basic cruise lines in the US market and to live up to their marketing hype however they did get some things right like the Beach Club at Bimini. Until changes discussed below are made, I would spend my money on a different cruise line.
Background - I am not an employee of Virgin or a friend/guest of any Virgin employee or any other cruise company or in the travel industry. I'm in my 40's and have been on approximately 38 cruises on many lines ranging from inexpensive weekend "booze" cruises to luxury cruises. I'm not a gambler, I prefer to spend my time at the various shows/events/live music/parties or nightclubs on the ship. I was on the October 6th Mermaiden voyage of the Scarlet Lady. I booked this cruise less than two weeks before departure as a replacement for a Virgin Voyages cruise that was cancelled due to Covid which I had booked when Virgin just started accepting bookings.
booked last minute and had an interior room although our friend's balcony room was appointed identically. The room was good sized overall but proportioned a bit strangely and could use some artwork. You control room lighting, TV, requests for service etc thru a touchpad in the room which was an excellent experience. The bed was a little hard but not as hard as some other lines. The furniture was very basic again with some sharp corners and stuff to stub your toe on. Think IKEA with perhaps a little more style. Instead of closet doors, there was a curtain. No drawers, just shelves. They made the bathroom tiny to conserve space. Also, for some strange reason Virgin chose to provide black soap which always made the sink look dirty. I found the room to be acceptable and well styled but definitely not luxury. The balcony rooms have a hanging red rope chair which was a great addition.
