We were due to go on a French river cruise in August, but unfortunately it was cancelled. We then saw that Uniworld, supposedly one of the best river cruise lines, were offering their trips for half the normal price. It seemed too good an opportunity to miss. Things did not bode well from the start. We experienced a great deal of difficulty booking the cruise, because staff in the UK office (based in the Channel Islands), did not seem bothered if we booked or not. The information we received was sketchy and calls / emails were not answered. Even after we had paid, on day 7 before our departure, we had no receipt of the money we paid, no confirmation of the booking, no booking reference and no transport details. To say we were concerned at that stage was an understatement. Eventually we got the information we needed, but it was a struggle.

The cruise itself was good. We booked one of the suites and it was roomy and comfortable. The staff were courteous, friendly and efficient. The food and drinks were plentiful and of a high standard. Excursions were OK, but usually only lasted the morning, and there were few other extra curricular activities. Evening entertainment was very limited ( 3 nights out of 7 ).

Are Uniworld worth the money they charge? Overall, we would say 'No' ,not even at half the price. Yes, the ship's interior has an extremely luxurious feel to it, and the cabins are very well appointed. However, we have taken many river cruises with other cruise lines and whilst the fixtures and fittings inside the ships are not so expensive, all other things are equal. (with some aspects slightly better).
