The first night - pre-cruise hotel was the Red Lion in Portland, Oregon as selected by American Cruise Lines. This hotel was dated and dirty. We had to change rooms to get one that didn't smell like cigarettes. A lot of homeless people surround the area. Not the type of accommodations you would expect for the amount of money spent on the cruise.
Now for the cruise. The boat is very nice and spacious for a riverboat. One thing we noticed there was never any bottled water in the room. That seems like that should be standard. The food was disappointing for the money spent. Average, at best, sometimes served not very hot. The crew was very new and mostly inexperienced. They were all very nice and admitted to having no training. The excursions were great and Todd the Riverlorian was excellent and very knowledgeable. Overall, compared to similar size cruises we've taken in Europe, this was a very expensive trip.
