The reason we picked this particular cruise is that we had some points from the Casino from previous cruises which we used to pay for some of the cost, and we had heard about the new Celebrity Edge ship and wanted to try it. We went on December 29 2019 to Jan 5 2020 on an Eastern Caribbean Cruise.
We thoroughly enjoyed the Equinox on an Eastern Caribbean Cruise the previous March, so thought another Celebrity cruise would be nice, particularly over the holidays...
The problem with Christmas holidays was that there were way too many kids on board, and this was very disruptive. Don't get me wrong, we love kids but having them chronically in your face all over the cruise (except the casino, thankfully), is difficult since many were boisterous, aggressive (particularly the tweens) they ran all over the place, didn't pay attention to watching out for the older guests, and were loud beyond belief. The yelling and running at mealtimes through the buffet area, got to be a bit much after a while. Our previous trip on the Equinox was no where near this disruptive, so we chalk it up to the holiday season and it being the wrong time to go, unless you have children. However, the Edge was a very nice, new ship, a technological marvel. Some of the areas such as main lounge area, and Eden were beautifully designed, and incredibly elegant. The staterooms were very high tech from central temperature controls, main cell charging station, automatic lighting, to large windows which slide open at the flip of a switch, opening the room right up to the outside. The rooms were beautifully designed and appointed, we had a Veranda room, and I would highly recommend that this type of room be selected on this ship. It adds a lot of space, the Veranda, to the overall size of the room. The bathroom was a decent size, water pressure was good and cabin lighting was optimal.
The food was very good overall on this cruise, although the menu got tiresome at the seated dinners in the evening. There would be a couple of changes each night, however the selections remained the same pretty much each night. Some of the selections simply were better than others, as we learned.
We enjoyed the breakfast and lunch buffets which had good selections each day, although we found a couple of times that there were spoiled vegetables in some of the salads (tomatoes for example), so we mentioned it to the managerial staff at the buffet and they mentioned they acknowledged it, and would rectify it. We noticed the same thing the next day at lunch, nothing had changed, unfortunately.
The service was very good by enlarge. Our cabin staff was outstanding, the general staff at restaurants and buffets were prompt and courteous for the most part. However there were some locations where we found that the staff was somewhat bothered by the guests, and this was evident at the pool bar during the afternoons. They seemed to be "short' with the guests.
For example, I asked for and drank virgin Bloody Caesars usually in the afternoons, and I noticed there was little care in the consistent preparation of the drink, which was disappointing. It was "thrown together" differently each day, too spicy one day, not the next, lime in it one day, none the next. That type of thing. Also I had a non alcoholic drink package, and sometimes ordering a non alcoholic beer was charged, sometimes not. Throughout the ship, the bar staff could not consistently decide if a non alcoholic beer was "non alcoholic".
The entertainment on this cruise we found to be just average. The music in the lounge at happy hour was usually very low key, a couple of singers playing guitar and singing soft ballads. What was needed was some hopping, good vibrations! Music to get people going, and dancing and enjoying a beautiful experience. This was not to be found anywhere on this ship, except for the main theater at night, there were a couple of decent shows, such as the Motown guys from New York, a couple of comedians, etc. Some of the main theater shows were lame, there was a woman playing the piano solo one night in the MAIN Theater of all places, again, boring.
But most of the time in the main lounge, we felt like going to sleep at 5 pm. And even on New Year's eve, same type of entertainment was playing in the main lounge. People were all dressed up for the night, all to experience a guy with a guitar is singing a slow, fall asleep rendition of "I heard it through the grapevine" . No kidding. No band, no drums, no anything to liven the music up, except a guy with a guitar and a whispering voice.
For all of the cruise we found slow, boring balladeers were singing, playing guitar, or instrumental versions of songs, and putting people into a yawning state of mind, as this was the entertainment throughout the ship. We looked for lounges and entertainment which would be lively and fun, but to no avail, could we find any. It was the same everywhere. Different musicians, same slow style. So we had insured on our survey at the end to mention it to Celebrity. This was one of the most annoying elements of this cruise. We should say that in the afternoons near the pool, a band singing some current hits would play for an hour, but this was not everyday.
Overall, we really enjoyed this cruise and the ship, the ports of call were very nice, (Tortolla, BVI etc,but we didn't get off in Puerto Rico- been there so many times), but we didn't book any excursions, we just went to the beaches on our own. However, we would still go back on the Equinox at any time, primarily because it was a bit quieter, the food was really good, and quite frankly, the guests seemed to be nicer overall. No pushing, no aggressive behavior, no cutting in lines, etc. We found a lot of guests on this particular cruise were very pushy and aggressive. We even noticed this in the casino. Women would physically tell you that they were going to play a machine and you were not to play it...
The only other issue we had was the 500 children on board, over the holiday season. If you want a quieter time, we would recommend that Christmas Holidays are NOT the time to go.
Beautifully appointed cabin, spacious and very modern in design.
Fully automated AC and lighting controls, main cellphone charging station with variety of plugs, comfortable king bed and TV set up. Seating area was spacious and comfortable, bathroom was well designed and comfortable, well lit.
Veranda portion of room was highly automated with blinds and full sliding window to open this area to make the room larger and more spacious.
This was a great spot to leave from, Parking was hard to find, but it was Christmas. The parking lot was literally right across the street from the departure area.
Same as always, didnt get off this time.
Only took this excursion because of transfer to beach and back. We had not been here before so we wanted to insure that we had a transfer and were guaranteed to come back to the ship on time. The beach was very nice in Tortolla, except it took 45 mins to get there from the ship. Too long in our books.View All undefined undefined Reviews
We took a walk around off the ship. We were harassed by people at the shops wanting to sell jewelry etc. We went back to the ship after an hour. We had a drink at one of the bars just off the ship.
