We wanted to try the new Saga ship Spirit of Discovery, having been sent numerous mailings about its design, facilities and the pleasures of 'boutique cruising'. So we decided to book a four-night cruise to Rouen and chose a de luxe balcony cabin.

Our break did not start well. We were informed that the previous cruise had norovirus on board and that the ship would be 'deep-cleaned' on its return to Southampton which would entail a delayed embarkation and departure. Having been on a cruise some years ago which had the virus on board we knew that the cleaning would not be 100% successful, so our initial reaction was to cancel, but we were told that no refunds would be made. So we decided to go, but with some trepidation.

As others have said this is a lovely ship, the décor is elegant in an understated style, the public rooms are spacious and quiet. The service is exceptional and the cuisine is some of the best we have ever had on any ship. We prefer to have a table for two which was no problem in the Grand Dining Room, but we could not get a table for two in any of the speciality restaurants which was disappointing. The evening entertainment was low key but pleasant. There was little to do during the day however.

Cabin Review

Well designed cabin; comfortable beds; nice bathroom with walk-in shower; no sofa just two uncomfortable arm chairs; small coffee table totally inadequate for more than snacks and drinks; plenty of hanging space for clothes.
