Ultimately A Disappointment

Celebrity Edge Cruise Review by Ragland T Tiger

Trip Details
  • Sail Date: Feb 2020
  • Destination: the Western Caribbean
  • Cabin Type: Edge Veranda Stateroom

We wanted to try the Celebrity Edge. This was our fourth Celebrity cruise. There are many aspects of the ship we truly enjoyed; however, they were other parts of the cruise we felt were not up to prior Celebrity standard.

Cabin: The cabin was beautiful and well appointed. We had a balcony cabin and we enjoyed the enclosed style balcony on the Edge. I am sure it will not be to everyone’s liking but we enjoyed the great views in ac comfort. The bathroom was the nicest and the largest we have ever had on a balcony cabin or any cruise line.

Dining: This was the biggest disappointment for us. The four main dining venues are nice but we quickly decided we prefer to have the large elegant multi level dining venues found on most large cruise ships. This service was, as we always experience, great. Unfortunately, neither my spouse nor I felt the same about the food in the main dining room. Simply stated, the quality and variety of the food in the MDR was not what we have come to expect from Celebrity. Fully agree with others who have made similar comments. The small and limited selection the spa snack area is essentially worthless. With our premium drink package, we looked forward to smoothies at the spa but found they were not very good. Further, the small food area closes at 2 o’clock and that’s it for the day. There is no other place on the ship to get a smoothie or any kind of special fruit or vegetable drink. The food in the buffet, though always very crowded at breakfast and lunch, was excellent and this is one area where Celebrity still stands out. We did not try any of the up charge dining venues. For my wife and I, the main dining room experience is a big part of the reason we enjoy cruising and a big part of the reason we are giving a three out of five star review.

Embarkation: Quick and simple; it definitely pays to fill out all those forms before arriving.

Enrichment: Do you count art auctions as an enrichment activity? We do not and I feel this really be an N/A score at best.

Entertainment: We thought the Hype show and Vox Fortura were outstanding. Other shows including a quartet that sang Michael Bublé songs, were average to good. We have always felt that Celebrity lounge were poor to bad compared to Princess and Royal Caribbean and Carnival and that impression was further confirmed by this cruise. The outdoor film venue in the garden on the upper deck is, to be honest, less than impressive. Every other cruise line does this much better

Fitness And Recreation: We did not use the gym. We felt the onboard activities were sufficient but nothing blew us away. Upper deck walking track is nice.

On Board Experience: Pleasant, no issues. The Captain was frequently in and about and is very personable. She and the superb cruise director were at the debarkation gangway to say goodbye to all. That impressed me and was appreciated.

I want to note that while this ship does have children’s programs, the ship and it’s entire vibe are clearly not designed with children in mind, including teenagers. There were very few children of any age on this cruise. Truthfully if you have kids up through high school age, they will probably enjoy a cruise on Royal Caribbean or Carnival or even Princess more than they would enjoy this one.

Public Rooms: Atrium is smaller than on most ships this size and thus very crowded, particularly in evening. Eden area is interesting and attractive and not that heavily used. On our cruise the wandering entertainers in Eden discussed in a formal review at this site were I in very little evidence. We felt the special drinks offered in Eden were, to be blunt, atrocious. I think worth trying if you have a drink package that covers. The martini bar in the atrium is the best place to hang out in the evening but again really crowded and hard to find a seat. For some reason, if you want a frozen margarita or similar, most bars on Edge cannot make. Color scheme and decor of ship are beautiful and very elegant.

Service: Know issue. We loved our room steward.

Shore Excursions: Did not use. The only one we booked was at Costa Maya and that port call was cancelled due to rough seas.

Value For Money: in sum, we felt we received a reasonable quality cruise for what we paid. Honestly however, for my wife and I, we would rather pay more and see the quality and variety of the food in the main dining venues returned to the level of Celebrity a decade past.

Cabin Review

Edge Veranda Stateroom

Beautiful cabin. We loved the infinity veranda. Air-conditioning and all other features worked fine. Bathroom is very large and very nice. Plenty of closet space and storage area. Reasonably good selection on the TV. All in all, one of the best features on the ship.

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

Key West

Very easy to walk to any and all attractions in Key West. Suggest seek out sign for Mile 0 on US Route 1. We thought was a cool photo

The small National Museum is very close to the pier and can be completed in under one hour. It is a well thought out small museum and worth visiting.

Grand Cayman (Georgetown)

National Museum is very close to dock. You can walk through in about an hour. It is well thought out and worth visiting.
