First ocean cruise, a top-tier experience all around

Our first cruise was a Viking River Cruise. The idea of cruising was not high on our list, but friends encouraged us to join them. Everything exceeded our expectations. The quality of Viking staff and the amenities on-board the ship were outstanding, and this ocean experience was even better.

The idea of a large ship with thousands of people is not appealing to us. The smaller sized Viking ships never had a feeling of being crowded.

We anticipated the disembarkation at ports of call would be slow, so were delighted that in most cases they were a breeze. In those few cases where bus transportation was required for everyone was any wait required, but things moved remarkably quickly.

Viking gave us the opportunity to review every tour. The tour director provided some verbal feedback to guests that feedback was received in the one case that a tour needed improvement.

And what a beautiful, well appointed ship. Sophisticated, not showy.

I would be remiss if I failed to mention the personalized attention of our dinner staff. They quickly learned our names and preferences, and made every evening in the Dining Room a special event.

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

La Sagrada Familia

Great introduction to the city. But the city does not provide reasonable ways for tour buses to pick-up passengers

Cartagena (Spain)

Too much time driving to a light house and back; not enough time to see the city and ruins.

Malaga City Tour

Great survey of the city from above and on the streets, then plenty of time on our own.

Compelling view and plenty of time to wander after lunch. Great orientation to the area.

Portsmouth (England)

Squeezed in two tours. Winchester Cathedral had the surprise treat of hearing the London Symphony practice. Not enough time to wander the town.

Thorough tour then lots of time to wander. Discovered an interesting art museum. An unexpected treat.

A great walking tour away from the usual highlights punctuated with a fantastic cheese and port tasting, and two other food stops that aren't worth mentioning.

Copenhagen

Had the opportunity to spend time with friends walking for hours across Copenhagen then finishing with dinner in their home. Outstanding end to a wonderful adventure.
