American Cruise Lines has been updating their fleet and the new American Harmony is gorgeous! It has an amazing amount of public space for a small ship, large staterooms, beautiful decorating, excellent food and a wonderful crew. The public space included outside decks, which are not so useful in December, but there were also multiple large lounges plus small lounges behind the elevators. Great design.

We were warned that, sailing with ACL over the holidays, we should take an extra suitcase. We left one half empty, but it was full when we came home and we bought nothing on the trip. They gave out incredible gifts almost every night (raincoats, fleece jackets, thermal mugs, etc). Other specials in December include better shows and bigger discounts on future cruising. We have been on 85 ocean cruises and 10 river cruises so we have many adventures to compare to. This was one of the best ever. We were so impressed we booked 6 more segments while onboard. This was just lower Mississippi, but they made each stop exciting and all Shore Ex was complimentary.

Definitely suggest cruising with ACL in late December.

Cabin Review

Very spacious at 405 sq ft. Closets are a bit tight, but otherwise very roomy, which is good because beds are only 10" off the floor so larger suitcase may not fit under - but room is large enough it is not an issue. We always take magnets to affix schedules, etc to the walls. Doesn't work on European riverboats which are apparently aluminum, but works fine in ACL. Large balcony, although could not use much in winter. AC was noisy, but worked great. There is a deck toilet outside this room. We like the location but we could hear the deck toilet when used. Must have been staff because no one was on the deck. Looks like they fixed this issue on the newer American Jazz. Would definitely do Deck 5 again in this layout.

Port Reviews

Vicksburg

They relive the horror of our Civil War there every day. This is where the war turned the tide in favor of the North. Very sobering but great history and geography lesson.

Baton Rouge

It was Xmas day, so everything was closed but we really enjoyed the walking tour. The ship's historian led the tour. Very educational. Hope to go back on a day when the government building are open for tours.
