Our first river cruise, aboard the Viking Lif was fantastic! We couldn't have selected a better cruise than the Grand European Tour. It provided everything that we were seeking in a European Holiday: a fascinating tour through the middle of Europe, beautiful scenery, rich history, and wonderful accommodations aboard a smaller ship. The service that was provided was exceptional -- we simply relaxed and let the Viking staff and the crew of the "Lif" take care of us, and they did a phenomenal job of getting to know us and tuning their service to fit our personalities and habits. The only shortfall of the vacation was that it left me wanting more: More time and tours in each port, more days in the cruise, and more finely prepared meals to savor -- three weeks with Viking was not enough! I believe another cruise is in order. I'll just change the destination, or possibly take the same cruise in the opposite direction for another great experience - yes!

Deluxe Stateroom

The room was terrific. Our room was small, an inside room at water level, but we didn't spend much time there -- just rest, sleep and preparation for the next day. It was a compact home for two weeks, but it that was adequate in space and always clean. Our fellow travelers had a balcony room, and they loved it, as they could stay in their room and watch the beautiful European countryside float by.

Port Reviews

Cologne

We enjoyed a fascinating tour of the city by day and a beer Pub tour in the evening.

Wurzburg

A beautiful stop, with a self-directed walking tour along the waterfront and a scheduled day trip out to historic, beautiful Rothenburg.

Bamberg

We took a tour that included a scenic drive through the country, stopping for a tour at the Seehof Castle, a pilgrimage church, and the town of Ziel.

Nuremberg

A pretty large, industrial city. Not one of my favorites, but there is alway some interesting WW-II facts and scenery that come out of the tour.

Regensburg

The next stop on the tour was a short ride up river to the old town of Regensburg, Germany. Surviving WW-II, it's famous for Old Stone Bridge, which dates back to the 11th century, and Roman fortification of which is still incorporated in to current building architecture. Just beautiful.

Vienna

A wonderful trip to see the highlights of Vienna.

Budapest

A fascinating tour to see some of the highlights and history of Budapest.
