Have taken multiple cruises on Princess and over 20 cruises total. The Sky Princess has all the benefits you would expect from a new ship. Its clean and fresh. The technology is excellent including the Medallion program and wifi. Make sure you download the app and pre-register as it makes everything go smoother. There was plenty of deck space, the fitness center is very well equipped, typical cruise ship casino, and our mini-suite was serviced well by the room steward.
Now for the not so good. Assuming the Cruise Director oversees entertainment, you would think Princess would put one of their better Directors on their newest and largest ship but that was not the case. Entertainment for the week was subpar and I don't think the staff made much of any type of effort. They really did not make the sale away any type of event. There were no deck parties at night. Other than the one production show Rock Opera and a singer who performed Broadway songs, the main showroom entertainment was well below par. They had the same comedian on 2 separate nights and two performers (one played guitar the other violin) who were more of a lounge act. They did a muppet show in one of the larger clubs and it was very much out of place. Everyone left rolling their eyes and wondering how this got booked. Princess should be embarrassed. I'm not speaking from what I personally like (one person may like a comedian and another may not) but I'm speaking as to what is adequate showroom entertainment. The cruise staff made no effort. They ran some concerts on the big screen by the pool but they even halfway did that. I like Sheryl Crow but why show a concert that was 15 years old. They ran a 10 year old Crowded House concert. Again, different taste for different people but would it have taken that much effort to play something of a more recent decade. The only entertainment bright spot was the house band Static who played mostly in the evening. Princess should re-evaluate the process and the personnel overseeing entertainment because they are greatly missing the mark on the Sky Princess.
The overall service, especially in the dining room was very poor. Did Anytime Dining and never really had a wait to be seated. The real wait came after being seated and it took literally hours to finish dinner. I realize the point of a cruise is to relax and not rush but that is no excuse for the poor service. Menus were not varied and unimaginative. My wife can't eat cheese and tried to get the chicken parm without and could not be accommodated. Similarly, the service around the bars was poor. If you wanted a drink then you need to go to the bar yourself and not wait for a server to come around. The overall impression is that Princess is cutting back, including personnel and the service is being effected. Crazy enough, but our best experiences were at the buffet which had a varied selection and the staff kept the table well bussed to there was never a problem finding a table. Overall, the quality of the food and the attention to service was poor.
In short, new ship was nice, entertainment poor, food mediocre, and service very spotty. Find another ship or even cruise line. Celebrity experiences have been far better.
Typical Princess mini-suite which we enjoy. Plenty of storage. Everything in good working order.
