My husband and I had our first cruise on our honeymoon 10 years ago, when we sailed the Alaska inside passage round trip from Vancouver. For our 10th wedding anniversary, we wanted to go back. It was well worth the wait.

We picked the Zuiderdam for 3 reasons - the itinerary, the size of the ship and the price. My husband and one of our friends are not good sailors, so leaving from Vancouver gave us the least time in open water. We also loved the fact that we got to sail to Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Glacier Bay again. Tracy Arm fjord was a nice bonus. My husband and I had a balcony on the port side, and our friends had a starboard room on the same deck right across from us. The balcony was definitely worth the money, especially in Glacier Bay.

The Zuiderdam is a nice medium size ship, and I'm pretty sure some of the scenic channels we sailed through heading south from Ketchikan would not have been attempted in a bigger ship. Plenty of room on board for scenic viewing, and we were happy with both the Main Dining Room and Lido restaurant food, although lunch could be slow in the Lido on non-port days when everyone seemed to eat at once and food line-ups were long.

Cabin Review

Deluxe Ocean-View Verandah Stateroom

Plenty of room in cabin, for sitting as well as storage. full bathtub and shower was excellent, no banging your elbows in this stateroom.

The balcony was big enough for 4 people, only downside was being right next to the lifeboats, so view forward was obstructed, but this didn't impact too much.

We liked being in the rear section midship - close enough to the elevators and stairs for a quick run up to the Lido restaurant or to head down to the Main Dining Room.
