What can I say about our holiday cruise on the Sky Princess on December 28th? Well let’s start with the positives 1. Sky Princess is a beautiful new ship 2. Static the band was great every time they performed and kept everyone dancing New Year’s Eve and other evenings 3. Our room steward was one of the best we have had over our years of cruising 4. Our assistant waiter was flawless and should be a head waiter he went over and above every time. 5. Embarkation and disembarkation was very efficient. Unfortunately for us the negatives out way the positives. First let me start with saying that our family and the friends that we travel with have been on multiple cruises over the years, Disney, Celebrity, Royal, in fact we actually got married on the Grand Princess so we know what to expect when we cruise. Sadly the Sky Princess was such a disappointment and did not even get close to meeting our expectations. 1. Service Levels: Better yet lack thereof – Our dinners took no less than 2.5 to 3 hours to complete. Not that we were in a hurry but seriously we weren’t finishing our dinners until 10:30 to 11:00 at night. This was in both the Soleil dining room with a late traditional dining seating time and also in the specialty dining restaurants. In Sabatini’s our waitress was run off of her feet for the number of tables she was working and she apologized for how long we had to wait, did I mention this was our 20th anniversary dinner, she did her best to make it special and we thanked her for all her efforts, but shame on you Princess for not providing the support to your staff. Another example, Crown Grill again we had a reservation, got seated and then waited for an hour for someone to even come and take our drink order, again our waiter had no support, was working multiple large tables and running around off his feet to serve his customers as best as he could. Again not his fault, this in on you Princess. 2. Dietary needs: Based on this experience we have ZERO confidence in the ability of Princess to manage any dietary needs which with our group of 8 we have members that live with severe Nut Allergies and Celiac disease which requires, nut fee and gluten free options at every meal. Did I mention that we’ve cruised as a group before and have never had the issues that we had on Princess, we did all the right things, through our bookings notified Princess of our restrictions, ordered meals the night before so that the chefs were prepared and yet then just couldn’t get it right in the Soleil dining room. They were so incompetent that when we finally had enough and called over the head Maitre d' and his assistant the head Maitre’d had the nerve to say and I quote “you can’t expect us to accommodate every food sensitivity that is out there” Yes we can and yes you should….that was it for us NEVER again Princess. 3. Lotus Spa: We booked the revitalization hydro therapy package for two for the week and so did half the ship. So when it came to using the spa it was either overcrowded, sensory showers or the sauna didn’t work, pick one. Clearly they didn’t keep track of how many people were in this tiny space nor did they clean it regularly, from towels and robes being all over the place, dropped on the floor because the bins were full or from a safety perspective, there must be a drainage issue since the floors didn’t just have a little water on them but full puddles just waiting for someone to wipe out. 4. Broken equipment: Every time we went into the Marketplace (food buffet) there was always an issue with the coffee machine or the ice machine. One or the other or both were always getting fixed. The breakdown of the ice machines was particularly annoying on shore days when you wanted to fill up your water bottles with ice. 5. Medallion: I’m all for technology but there is no way I’m putting mine or my families passport and photo identification into an app. Which you don’t need to do by the way. You are just waiting for identity theft to happen. Having said that, while I appreciate some of the features of the Medallion options what it doesn’t provide or guarantee is your privacy, every cabin has each occupants full name listed first and last which don’t think is necessary or safe, as a mother of two older teen girls who had their own cabin anybody going by their room with this system now knows their full names. Princess if you need to identify the occupants in the cabins stick to A. Smith instead of putting full names for all to see. As well if you have the app everything is available, for the sake of “conservation” there should be an option to opt out of receiving the paper Princess Patter every day. Ours went straight into the garbage. There is more but I think you get the point. We were really looking forward to this cruise and were very disappointed and with the arrogance in incompetence that we experienced related to our dietary needs it is safe to say we will NEVER cruise with Princess again.
